1. How long will it take to get my Licence?

Via Full-time The MTI Way – Platinum Course:
– Class 1 Licence and The MTI Way Training – 9 weeks
– Coach-Mentorship Program (for students that meet the MTI Way requirements) – 4 weeks
– Total for full The MTI Way program – 12 weeks

2. Do I need my Air Brake Endorsement?

You do not need to complete the Air Brake Course before you write your learner’s license and start your driving instruction.
However, you will need to complete a certified Air Brake Course and pass ICBC’s written test before you can take your Class 1, 2, or 3 Road Test. The Air Brakes endorsement course is included in The MTI Way program. MTI also offers stand-alone Air Brakes Endorsement courses on a regular basis.

3. What extra costs will I have to pay to receive my License?

  • Written Tests (Air Brakes, Class 1 Learner’s) – $15 each
  • Class 1 Road Test Fee – $60
  • License Renewal Fee – $17 or $75 depending on the date of your regular renewal
  • Medical Processing Fee – $28
  • A Medical Exam may be required, fees will vary according to each medical office – approximately $95 to $150

4. What kind of vehicle does each class cover?

  • Class 1 – Any tractor/trailer combination and any other type of vehicle except motorcycles
  • Class 2 – Bus, including school bus, or any class 4 or 5 vehicle
  • Class 3 – Single unit vehicle with more than two axles, such as dump trucks or large tow trucks
  • Class 4 (unrestricted) – Taxi, ambulance, vehicle transporting disabled persons, small bus or school bus that seats a maximum of 25 people, including driver
  • Class 4 (restricted) – Taxi, ambulance or vehicle transporting disabled persons
  • Class 5 – Any two axle passenger vehicle, motor home, limited speed motorcycles, mopeds or mini-scooters
  • Class 6 – Motorcycle

5. What do I need to study for a Class 1, 2 or 3 learner’s license?

The most current version of a book called “Driving Commercial Vehicles” which is free at any ICBC Driver Service Centre, at MTI’s office or the ICBC website.

6. When can I start my training course?

Air brakes courses run at the school approximately monthly. Check our Start Dates page for upcoming The MTI Way and Air Brakes course dates.

8. What age requirements are there for air brakes, Class 1, 2 and 3?

  • Air Brakes – 16 years old with a valid BC class 5 or out-of-province equivalent driver’s license.
  • Class 1 – 19 years old with a valid BC class 5 or out-of-province equivalent driver’s license.
  • Class 2 – 19 years old with a valid BC class 5 or out-of-province equivalent driver’s license.
  • Class 3 – 18 years old with a valid BC class 5 or out-of-province equivalent driver’s license.
